Ha! I hadn't seen it, but my life is a breeze compared to that, I'm sure!
No, he was actually a saying the surroundings were a dump, but the people were so colorful that he loved living there. I know he once worked long ago as a kind of "all purpose errand guy" for a wealthy family, so it had to be a trip working all day on Park Avenue in that splendor and then coming home to a dump. BUT, he loved the people in Spanish Harlem way more than his employers. So I guess the moral of the story is, there is beauty even in plain or ugly surroundings if you know how to look for it. :)
